Snoop Dogg is catching a lot of heat as of late. There's an organization called Project Islamic Hope along with several AIDs/HIV groups that are targeting Snoop for releasing an x-rated video. The Project Islamic Hope group has already visited 100.3 The Beat's station manager demanding that Snoop's popular syndicated radio show be canceled. Project Islamic Hope has already protested several other projects that they feel are detrimental and offensive including the movies 'How To Be A Player', 'Player's Club' and the TV show 'The PJs'. The AIDs/HIV organizations feel that Snoop by releasing the x-rated video is contributing to the spread of the diseases which is at epidemic proportions throughout the Black community. Thus far The Beat has declined to cancel Snoop's show citing that they support his right to free speech...mmmm this is the same radio station that unceremoniously canceled the 'Wake Up Show' after they refused to play music that they felt contained overly commercial and oftentimes negative themes... The next step in this fight for Project Islamic Hope is to galvanize, local ministers and other religious leaders..

Big shout outs are in order to Talib Kweli. He made good use of his time while visiting the Bay Area for his Erykah Badu tour which did two dates here in Oakland. We caught up with Talib on our Hard Knock Radio show on 94.1 FM KPFA and engaged in an in-depth discussion about Talib's take on politics. I raised some questions surrounding some remarks that he made on BET not to long about the way Black folks have been faring under Democratic and Republican administrations. Talib's perspective was 'Whether Gore or Bush is the president doesn't matter to me. We've participated more and more in this political system and our communities are getting worse and worse. So my focus is really on community stuff, and dealing with people and how we relate to each other, and self-esteem issues" Talib went on to add that the only thing that changes are 'political trends, but not the way people deal with these trends. In our discussion Talib stuck to his guns and emphasized the importance of us rolling up the sleeves to help those who are less fortunate in the community. He talked about the bookstore he and Mos Def own and how they have been striving to make that a viable place in their native community to achieve those ends..

I also asked Talib how he felt about the NAACP not nominating him or Mos Def for an image award in the Rap category especially since the pair had publicly embraced many of the NAACP's pet projects like racial profiling and police brutality. Talib explained that he wasn't sweating the issue, yet he wasn't too surprised. He noted that oftentimes the awards show comes down to a popularity contest..and this time around him and Mos didn't fit the bill.. He was touched that many headz did raise a stink about it...

In keeping with his commitment to reach out to the community, Talib stopped through Berkeley High to participate in a discussion with many of the students. He also performed at a local night club-the Justice League where he gave an incredible show that was complete with back up singers who were off the hook. There was nothing but praise for Talib's appearance... He also spent some time in a local Bay Area studio recording some tracks for an upcoming project..

A PHAT Award goes out to Treach from Naughty By Nature is stepping up as gets ready to star in an independent film called 'Face'. The movie stars actress Bai Ling and revolves around a story of three generations of Chinese women caught between maintining their traditional culture vs assimilating to mainstream American culture. In the meantime Naughty By Nature is back in the studio working on another album and they are getting ready to release an DVD that contains tour footage, music videos and photos..

A Phat Award goes out to the people behind Stanford University's Black Arts Quarterly. Their Spring 2001 issue will be dideicated entirely to Hip Hop Culture as they examine Black Art in the 21st Century. They will be accepting submissions that deal with various facets of Hip Hop culture from a multi-disciplinary approach. In their press release they noted..'We encourage papers from African American Studies, Anthropology, Cultural and Ethnic Studies, International Studies, Linguistics, Philosophy, History, Religious Studies, Music, English, Sociology, Womenís Studies, Urban Studies and other disciplines. Academic analyses, as well as essays, poetry, artwork, photography, and other forms of prose will be considered...Raps, graffiti art, and other submissions from a hip hop frame of mind are especially encouraged.' For more info be sure to check out Black Arts Quarterly back issues at http://www.stanford.edu/group/CPBA/BAQ.html.For more info regarding submissions and formats that will be accepted drop and email to mailto:writealim@yahoo.com. or give them a call at 650-723-4402

Since we're on the subject of academia, lets give a PHAT Award to the good folks at Oberlin College in Ohio. If you happen to be in the near there this weekend, they will be hosting a Hip Hop Conference in which the focus will be Hip Hop: The Roots of Resistance. As was noted in one of their press releases.. "Hip Hop culture is often discusses out of its social context. The Black community is usually not included as part of the conversation on Hip Hop. The language, dress and politics of Hip Hop are African American aesthetics, yet the Black community receives the least acknowledgment from its commercialized and appropriated form. Hip Hop culture has spread across the globe; however, the elements accessible to the general public are controlled by capitalism and commercialism" The buyers and sellers of Hip Hop have taken all the elements that are of market value and left behind the most important part: its orgins..." I will be giveing a keynote address on this topic on Friday March 16th at 6;30pm.. Hopefully I'll see some of y'all that are near Oberlin College..

LL Cool J is set to hit the big screen again. The name of the film is 'Kingdom Come' and this time he'll be joined by such notables like Cedric The Entertainer, Vivica Fox, Toni Braxton, Jada Pinkett Smith, Clifton Davis and Whoopi Goldberg to name a few. The film which is directed by Doug McHenry [Jason's Lyrics and House Party 2] is a comedy based upon a play called 'Dearly Departed'. It focuses on the trials and tribulations of the Slocumb Family after the sudden death of family patriarch Woodrow 'Bud' Slocumb.

According to the film's press release, the audience gets to share the experiences of the long-suffering Charisse (Jada Pinkett Smith) who is sick of her bumbling, unfaithful husband Junior (Anthony Anderson). The scripture-spouting Marguerite (Loretta Devine) prays to save her hard-living son Royce (Darius McCrary) whose chief ambition is a life on welfare. Family peacekeeper Lucille (Vivica A. Fox) has her hands full with a money hungry funeral director, and her husband, Ray Bud, (LL Cool J) who would rather bury his family than his father. As the Slocumbs squabble and fight their way to the funeral, they discover new ways to define the term dysfunctional.&Mac226;

When Reverend Hooker (Cedric The Entertainer) threatens to derail the burial with a bad case of intestinal trouble; Ray Bud finds that "Daddy Bud" has a valuable lesson to teach them all before they lower him into the ground! The re will be a special screening of this film in Los Angeles this weekend..

Like Father like son.. or so the saying goes. It looks like Master P's 11 year old son.. Lil Romeo is set to follow in his dad's footsteps by releasing an album. It's titled 'Souljah Boy' and should be out on June 5th.. The album was produced by Jermaine Dupri who already has a successful track record with another young rapper who we all know and love as Lil Bow Wow.. Is there a duet or a lil boys group in the works??? mmmmm. Also helping produce the album will be Diesel, and C-Los Beats. The first single, "My Baby," has already been shipped to radio, and some of the other tracks featured on Soulja Boy include "The
Girlies," "I Want Your Back," "Your ABCs," and "Lil' Soldiers Need Love."

Looks like Eve has some unexpected bills to pay thanks to some of her overzealous fans. Last week she was spotted waiting for a limo after her album release party at club Chaos in downtown Manhattan. Fans who spotted her besieged her. Eve had no choice but to run for cover inside a neighboring deli known as Banga Bazaar. The owner locked the door to his shop to help her out, especially after she was heard calling out for help. Overzealous fans decided to smash in the doors and come after Eve. They also decided to ransack the premises. More 5 thousand dollars worth off damage was done. Eve , who apparently felt bad about the incident wrote on a napkin.. an IOU. The deli owner is seeking to have her honor the commitment. Eve's record label Interscope has stated they will definitely take care of things..

It looks like Hip Hop is about to lose on of its legendary DJs. We're sad to learn that Kool DJ Red Alert of Hot 97 is leaving the station. Apparently the management decided to cut his hours as well as his pay to the point that Red thought it would be best to bounce. What a shame when you take into account that Red was recently inducted into the Rock N Roll Hall of Fame and was the recipient of the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award from Impact Magazine..You simply don't come across people of Red's stature. He's Hip Hop premier radio deejay who has been on the scene from day one. He came up under Afrika Bambaataa and is cousin to the legendary Jazzy Jay. He started wrecking turntables back in '76-'77 at many of the early Hip Hop block party community center gigs. He later went on to put in work with his cousin Jazzy Jay on a show called Zulu Beats which aired on independent radio station WHBI. Red graduated from there and really began to blow up the spot in October of '83 when he was hired by commercial urban giant Kiss FM. It is here that Red established his world wide reputation. There wasn't a Hip Hop fan from here to Japan that didn't have a Red Alert mixtape.

Red's reputation really grew during the now infamous 'Bridge Wars' where he went head to head with former radio rival Mr Magic and the Juice Crew. Red backed an emerging KRS-One and Scott La Rock and could be heard in the background on some of their records with his now famous 'yeeeeaahhhh'... Red also established a reputation for being versatile as he was one of the first commercial radio djs to come out and start playing reggae on the air. In addition to putting out several Hip Hop compilation albums, Red also released some well received reggae compilations. Lastly Red is also credited with introducing the Hip Hop world to the his nephews who made up the Jungle Brothers.

When 98.7 Kiss switched formats and came under the ownership of Emmis Broadcasting which also owns Hot 97, Red Alert moved as well and began doing their noon time old school mixes.. It was here that Red enhanced his reputation even more..But as of Friday, Hip Hop's legendary DJ... The guy who was on radio longer then anyone else is stepping off... Currently Red has been getting lots of offers, but as one long time associate pointed out, Red deserves his own radio station. He should ideally be programming some sort of station thaqt caters to an old school format.. We'll keep our fingers crossed to see if that happens. Inj any case its shame that Hot 97 let one of Hip Hop's true pioneers who's been on radio for almost 20 years, walk out the door.. Folks may also want to look out for Red's upcoming album 'DJ Red Alert Presents Beats, Rhymes and Battles of Hip Hop Volume 1' on Loud Records

By now everyone knows that DMX was released from prison after a tumultuous two week stay. He was able to get out in time for the special premier screening of his new movie Exit Wounds which was shown at the Zigfield Theater in New York. Apparently when he got out, he was on crutches. The injuries were attributed to rough treatment from correction officers who claim that they did nothing wrong except constrain an 'out of control' DMX.... Other reports state that from the moment he entered the facilities, prison guards were targeting him and trying their best to break him down.. Unfortunately he will have to appear in court before the end of the month to answer some of the felony charges these correction officials have levied on him..

In any case I was in New York, this weekend and got a chance to run into DMX at the premier. He wasn't on crutches that evening. After the movie DMX did an hour long performance at the posh Rainbow Room. It was good to see him ripping the mic. The man has incredible energy and great charisma. he left everyone hyped. He closed the show by reciting his prayer in which he gives thanks to God. With him being out of prison and on the verge of having what will easily be a number one movie, the X man has lots to be thankful for..

So how was Exit Wounds? How was Steven Segal? How was DMX? And how was fellow Ruff Ryder Drag On who is also in the movie? It was exciting. DMX held is own on the screen as did Drag On. Don't expect DMX to beat out Samuel Jackson or Denzel Washington for Best Actor, but do expect this movie to do quite well and be quite appealing to Steven Segal and DMX fans.. I got a chance to interview Segal after the movie and he explained what it was like working with DMX. He said he put 110% effort into his film. He also explained that he hurt DMX's shoulder when filming their fight scenes. I won't ruin the picture or give away the plot, but DMX does get busy with some martial arts... On a side note Segal is about to put out his own album. Its not a rap album, but it was produced by Wyclef.. We'll keep you posted on that...
