Does The Music Industry The Grammy Awards and MTV Have One Standard For Offending Homosexuals And Another For Everyone Else?

Yesterday's LA Times article, "Eminem's Grammy Nod Strikes a Blow for, and to, the Critics" does an excellent job of depicting the blatant hypocrisy emanating from some of Hip-Hop's worst "critics" as well as from within and without the National Academy Of Recording Arts And Sciences.

Every year since I can remember the event, the Grammys have nominated songs and albums in the "Rap", "Heavy Metal", "Alternative" categories that promote misogyny, racism, sexism, murders, theft, rape, incest, and wellÉeven cruelty to animals.

The Grammys have given awards to songs with foul language which refer to Black people as "niggers", Black and White women as "bitches" and "whores" and which refer to Asians, Jews and Latinos in very derogatory terms.

I have never seen an outrage coming from inside of the music establishment, from either MTV, the Grammys or the various interest groups over the awards that have gone to heavy metal groups which have received awards for albums which contain derogatory references to Black people and other ethnic groups. Nor have I seen it for the various rap albums every year which are awarded to rap groups every year which disrespect Black women and Black men.

I have, of course, seen the efforts of Blacks like C. Delores Tucker and some Black preachers who have been outraged over such lyrical content, in rap music.

But I have never openly seen the industry question or oppose one of its own like is the case with Eminem on the grounds of offensive lyrics. Usually such attacks come from outside the music community.

There are reports that there was weeping and crying at the internal meetings of the Grammy Special Selection Meeting when Eminem's lyrics were played and discussed.

I wonder how much weeping and crying went on when the murders of young Black men are described and played out on rap songs/albums which were nominated for Grammys in previous years.

We doubt if the "special selection committee" generated enough concern to produce even a couple of tears.

Strangely, when it comes to the disrespect of Women, Blacks, Jews, Asians and other ethnic groups, - MTV and other members of the music industry establishment rush to defend the right of the artist to express themselves. They cleverly frame the argument into an issue of free speech and censorship.

But not when it comes to lyrical content that disrespects or offends homosexuals.

I very clearly noticed this during the broadcast of the MTV awards when, throughout the program, MTV ran commercials admonishing people not to use the word "faggot" in reference to Gay people - http://www.blackelectorate.com/archives/010500.asp Davey D's Hot Picks For the week..........

8BALL & MJG 'Thank God'-85 bpm [Jcor]

A cool song about God.. I wish they did more songs like this on their album. Its a great change of pace and comes across great without being too preachy..

CLEVER JEFF & SUPERSTAR QUAM ALLAH 'North Poll'-92 bpm [Amoeba]

These two North Oakland cats come with a dope song that's an interpolation of the classic BDP song 'South Bronx'.. North Pole is a nickname for North Oakland. It's featured on the compilation album 'Just Paying Rent'

KOOL G RAP w/ MOP 'Legendary Street Team'-88 bpm [Rawkus]
Rap/NY/Thugged Out

Its cool to hear some of Brooklyn's finest emcees hook up with the legendary Kool G Rap as they wreck shop over a blazing beat.. This song has been issued on a 12" and is taken from the Lyricist Lounge Vol 2 album...

MASTERS OF ILLUSION 'The Bay-bronx Bridge'-105 bpm [Threshold]

YUKMOUTH 'Clap Yo Hands'-80 bpm [Rap-A-Lot]

Luniz member Yukmouth borrows a page from Nelly and brings a dope song that borrows from an old school Nursery Rhyme.-'If your happy and you know it clap your hands' .. Its good to hear this Bay Area native son back on the mic with a bomb ass song..

==========================

Was it me or was there something strange and ironic about Xzibit's performance the other night when he was on MTV. He decided to take it back to the old school by paying tribute to Public Enemy. Hence he performed the song 'Fight The Power' which was dope.. What threw me was the T-shirt he wore with enlarged letters that read 'FU*K NAPSTER' , His partner had a shirt that read 'I VOTED FOR GORE' and his DJ/ producer Fredwreck wore a T-shirt that read 'FREE PALESTINE'. Knowing Chuck's position on Napster and Digital downloading, I found Xzibit's choice of songs and T-shirt juxastaposed to Chucks.... Hopefully Napster is not the power that Xzibit feels he needs to fight.. He may wanna try fighting the record labels that pay 10% and less to their artist,, radio statiuons that play only the same 10 songs, large chain stores that won't sell independent and small 'underground' groups, magazines that sell ratings, video outlets that require a 250 thousand dollar video before it gets considered for airtime and a commercial music industry that successfully lobbied congress to eliminate micropowered radio stations and not make them less accesible to the public.. Hence should Xzibit come out with a song that doesn't bang as hard as his current single 'X' he may find his opportunities to get his music to the public severly diminshed by an industry that gets pissed when it doesn't control new technology.. Also he may wanna turn his attention to all those bootleggers that I saw damn near on every block in New York with bootleg copies of his album..

In related Napster news, it may not be too long before free downloads are a thing of the past. Before years end, Napster had reached an agreement with BMG distributions to charge a monthly subscription for users. Currently folks are able to trade on Napster for free, but under the new agreement , subscriptions would be split between Napster and artists..The feeling is at least among BMG is that Napster is no longer a threat but instead a viable revenue source for artist. In addition it fills a void that the music inustry hasn't been able to meet, which is providing fans the opportunity to get the music they want on demand...Hit me back and let me know what you think of Xzibit's 'Ironic performance' mailto:kingdave@sirius.com
