FIRST THINGS FIRST.. First thing first...Ya know ya large when you can sit back and tell Michael Jackson who is the King of Pop that you do not wanna produce his album.. Apparently that's what Dr Dre recently did...According to MTV, Dre Dre and Michael Jackson's peoples had been in discussions about the possibility of Dre coming on board to help resurrect Michael's career. Jackson was working on his first album in almost a decade.. Dre told reporters that when he was approached about this he had to decline. He noted that he prefers to work with new artists or folks he had hooked up with in the past. Perhaps Dre caught wind of how Jackson has been in the past when other heavy weight producers like Teddy Riley have come on board to lay down tracks.. The word that had been circulating was that Jackson is very particular and more often then not would reject hype material from these producers that reflected their signature sound.. Hence you may have a situation where Dre comes up with a dope head nodding beat beat that Jackson would turn down until it was more diluted.. Remember he is the King of Pop...

Jackson's album should be ready this summer...Plus there's talk about him hooking up with his famous brothers to contribute to a new Jackson 5 album..In the meantime Dre has his plate completely full. He just finished producing for Eve's upcoming album called 'Scorpion'. Next up he has to produce Rakim.. And if everything goes according to plan Dre will be producing Ice T's album...

Speaking of Ice T, he intends on coming to the plate with some serious heat on his next album. The working title is 'The Eight Wonder: The Ice Age' and it will feature appearances from Snoop Dogg, Eminem, Prodigy, Guru and Mobb Deep. Ice noted that by having such a star studded line up it will force him to step up his game and improve upon his rap skillz.. After all, Ice T doesn't want to be overshadowed our outshined on his album..

Tip of the Day: Jam up your respective US State Senators either via phone calls or email and ask them to deny confirmation for John Ashcroft for Attorney General..This guy if approved will become America's top cop.. If you think Mayor Rudoulph Giuliani was bad.. This guy makes him look like a boy scout.. If you think all the police brutality and racial profiling cases will which were being pushed to the Attorney General will get resolved and see the light of day, think again! In addition the Attorney General gets to take certain cases and bring them before the Supreme Court.. Don't sleep on this folks.. Remember those Senators in New Jersey who attempted to pass a bill prohibiting the sale of rap music that talked about certain subject matter including race and crime earlier this year? Well keep in mind, Ashcroft rolls like that.. If you don't know your Senator's email or phone numbers hit up this website.. http://www.senate.gov/index.cfm If you have a Hip Hop Tip of the Day you'd like to see published..hit me up at mailto:kingdave@sirius.com

Pet Peeve of the Day: Rappers who get on stage and spend all their time demanding that the sound man 'Turn It Up' .. Usually the system is distorting and the artist sounds like crap because he either has twelve people on stage, shouting over him, he's cupping his hands over the mic..or he showed up late with a messed up dat tape. Try showing up to sound check on time buddy.. and have a back up plan like the ability to rock the house accapella... If you have a Hip Hop Pet Peeve you'd like to see published..hit me up at mailto:kingdave@sirius.com

Observation of the Day: Is it me or has anyone noticed Today Show Host Katie Couric using Hip Hop jargon from time to time.. A few months back she through me for a loop when she casually used the word 'dis' while reporting a story. Now its a regular part of her vernacular.. Earlier this week she was talking to a guest and used the phrase 'Whaddup? Note the spelling.. because that's how she said it.. Whaddup? Again it was effortless and it didn't seem like she was trying to be hip.. Could it be Katie's an undercover Hip Hopper or is our influence permeating all aspects of society? Perhaps its Katie's kids bringing the jargon into the home and its rubbing off on moms or perhaps she has a secret Hip Hop lover we don't know about.. mmmm it makes me wonder...whaddup wit dat?

It looks like there's some trouble brewing in Detroit as the local Hip Hop community is ready to shut down radio station WJLB for not supporting homegrown talent..They join a growing list of cities which include Chicago, Seattle and New York to name a few where local talent has found themselves being overlooked and played to the curb.. Here's a copy of the recently released press release..

A Protest and subsequent Boycott of WJLB FM 97.9 will be held on Friday January 19, 2001 from 11:00-1:00 PM at the Penobscot Building Suite 633 Fort St. Detroit, MI.

Spearheaded by the Detroit Hip-Hop Coalition, a conglomeration of Michigan Hip-Hop Artists, Promoters, Disc Jockeys, Magazines, Designers, Entrepreneurs, and their Supporters, this demonstration is the first step to dramatize WJLB's total lack of support for area Artists/Bands. WJLB bills itself as the "voice of the community" and frequently uses its position as a bully pulpit. But it refuses to support any area Hip-Hop artists with any significant airplay. It ignores telephone requests for area artists while simutaneously profiting from events it sponsors in local venues.

Detroit Hip-Hop is recognized world-wide, however area artists are left to eke out a living, chiefly because of the lack of support by this station.
FM 98's Program Directors are the BIGGEST CULPRITS. Any and all supporters are encouraged to participate.  For further information, contact Brandon Wilkens at (313) 300-6332, Rob Gill (248) 797-9919 or Lee Martin (313) 767-9214  Thank You.

-----------------------------------

As the Puffy and Shyne trial gets underway prosecutors are stepping up the heat by requesting to use Shyne's lyrics as evidence against him. They liken his descriptive lyrics as him bragging about the shooting incident that took place a year ago in a New York night club.. Shyne's lawyers take the position that it would be a violation of the First Amendment and that Shyne's frequent references to crimes and gun in his album are fictional..Prosecutors using rap lyrics to hem up rappers are becoming more and more commonplace. I know for myself I have been approached on three different occasions to be an expert witness in cases [I turned down the requests].. However, more and more folks are combing over lyrics and seeing if there is a correlation between what artist write about and their subsequent behavior. The fact that so many rappers make a point to say 'they are keeping it real' and all their doing is 'reflecting reality' can be haunting words that are used against them..

On the flipside, its highly doubtful prosecutors will look at old film footage of actors or writings by authors and use that as evidence..Are we looking at any roles once played by actor Robert Downing Jr and trying to make a connection between his on going drug use and past roles? Perhaps we can take it a step further, the next time some big time Mafia Crime boss is on trial can we take the late Mario Puzo's estate to court and put his work before the court and make the case that it has undue influence? Better yet can we get actor James Gandolfini on the stand and make the case that his portrayal of Tony Soprano is the cause of violent behavior?

If all this isn't enough, here's another strange twist in the Shyne Puffy trial. One of the folks scheduled to testify against Shyne is Gavin 'Pretty Boy' Marchand who is Foxy Brown's brother.. In fact Shyne attempted to fire his lawyer because he had once represented Marchand in an unrelated case..This should be an interesting trial indeed..
