FIRST THINGS FIRST.. Bow Down To The Silver & Black

First things first, I was a bit disappointed that I did not get congratulatory emails from many of you after Saturday’s decisive and stunning victory of the future world champion Oakland Raiders over the wack ass Miami Dolphins. I was looking for telegrams, packages and special emails. I will assume that this was a busy weekend and y’all just plain forgot… But it was all good.. Big shout out to my man Dynamo.. He’s a local rapper who came though and blessed the stadium that was packed with 70 thousand fans with a Hip Hop song called ‘Welcome To The Blackhole’. For those who don’t know the Blackhole is a special section at the Coliseum behind the Raider end zone.. Ya got to wear Black and be a diehard Raider fan to sit there. It’s reserved for only the best of the best.... It was cool that the Raiders let some Hip Hop get represented during the playoff game.. I’m glad Dynamo rocked it..

Also represented throughout the game was MC Hammer’s classic groove ‘Oaktown’.. The Raiders played that throughout the game.. I guess it’ll be the Raiders vs The Giants in the Superbowl after we take care of that excuse for a team from Baltimore.. I’m trying to remember their name..is it the Colts or did they switch up and name themselves after some bird? It doesn’t matter next week is just a formality and a quick opportunity for the networks to make some money.. Raiders vs The Giants.. I’ll see you folks in Tampa.

Oh yeah if any of you cats desire to get down with the silver and black.. I’m gonna wave the usual fees and let y’all get on the band wagon for free.. I’ll even toss in a silver and Black t-shirt so you can be fitted probably.. Big shout outs to my mane Big Paul and Ricky Leigh over at Hits Magazine…Also big shout out to my man Latin Prince... We reserved some special seats for them to hop on the Raider bandwagon…If you guys are nice I'll let you all kiss our Superbowl ring..

Tip of the Day: If you haven't done so go see the moving Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon.. This is an off the hook movie and a must see for any martial arts fan.. In fact stop what your doing.. Grab your car keys and head out to your nearest theater.. The movie is all that and then some...

Observation of the Day: Many people like to credit the Hip Hop community with being the first to popularize sagging pants.. While I'll be the first to admit that Hip Hop has started a lot of styles and trends.. However we gotta give credit where credit is due.. The first to wear sagging pants are overweight, beer drinking white guys most notably janitors and repairmen... I realized this while leaving the Raider game and had to walk behind this huge white cat who guzzling a bear and had his butt crack peeping through his sagging jeans..As we walked I suddenly realized where Hip Hop picked up this fashion statement.. 'Damn those beer guzzlers were the original saggers.. Hip Hop just made the style more fashionable by allowing you to see the tops of the boxers and not the butt crack.. Ya learn something new everyday..

Pet Peeve of the Day: Cats who get on TV and radio and instead of answering questions and going along with the interview they sit up there and keep shouting out their album release date.. Am I the only one bothered by this? LL Cool J took it over the top during the MTV Video Awards.. Most recently Funkmaster Flex and an over zealous Fredro Starr of Onyx were guilty of this during some recent appearances.. Hint: Get your label to buy some commercials.. Don't bumrush interviews with shout outs about your upcoming album.. The world would be a better place if you weren't shouting out your album like your life depended upon it..

*SONDOOBIE SHOT
*VANILLA ICE ARRESTED..

On a more serious note, we wanna wish a speedy recovery to Sondoobie of the group Funkdoobiest. Last week homeboy was shot in LA after he was jacked for his watch. From what I was told, he wasn’t quick about giving up the goods and the assailant shot him twice. In fact if I heard correctly, he may have even dared the assailant to shoot.. He was shot in the lower torso and is expected to make a speedy recovery..

Everyone’s favorite lyricist Vanilla Ice has joined the long list of rap cats who have been arrested over the past year. Mr Van Rinkle as his friends like to call him was arrested and charged with spousal abuse.. He vehemently claims his innocence and would never lay his hands on his wife or any female. However, he did admit to having a heated argument with his wife. The way the initial reports read was Vanilla Ice tried to cover his wife’s mouth to keep her from speaking…The incident took place in front of his kids and had his wife telling police she feared for her safety… Police on the scene noticed that the woman’s hair had been pulled. Vanilla Ice explained that he grabbed his wife hair to prevent her from jumping out of the vehicle… In any case the whole story is sad.. It’s never cool to strike your spouse…If he did do it lets hope he gets some help. This is the second high profile incident of spousal abuse in recent months coming out of the Hip Hop arena.. Not too long ago one of the members of Brand Nubian got their name in the paper and was accused of manhandling their spouse..

With respect to Vanilla Ice, I guess next time I peep an interview and hear him laying claim that he’s a hardened gang banger from the hood, he’ll be able to boost about his recent arrest and night spent in jail as proof he’s a rough and tough cat from the streets..

PUFFY TRIAL DELAYED AND SILENCED

Since were talking about cats in trouble, it’s going to be interesting to see how the trial with Sean Puffy Combs and Shyne comes out. Last Friday a judge issued a gag rule for all those involved parties.. I guess he doesn’t want this to be a media circus and he probably wants to preempt whatever attempts are made either by the District Attorney or Puff Daddy to win public support by having the trial play out through the press.. For example, last week Puff was making the rounds, most notably on Tavis Smiley’s BET Tonight show to let folks know what was going down with his trial. He also caused quite a stir just before Christmas when he spoke at length to the New York Daily News.

A Puffy conviction in which he serves jail time would be a big feather in the cap for the Manhattan district attorney Robert Morgenthau. This is especially true when you take into so many high profile entertainers and sports figures seem getting into trouble and leaving the impression with the public that they are above the law.. In the past, many of these high profile types have been assembling legal dream teams and more often then not avoiding jail time for serious offenses. Trust me, if the DA could beat Puff on this one, it would be big news…

On the flip side, with so many brothas consistently being targeted, profiled and locked up by the police, in many circles, folks would be see the attempts to incarcerate a high profile guy like Puffy as further proof of this ongoing problem.. As I mentioned last week, there is a distinct possibility that by years end three of Hip Hop’s biggest names, Eminem, Jay-Z and Puffy could all be behind bars for a litany of charges ranging from assault to gun possession. Imagine all the discussions pro and con that would take place if that occurs…. As for the trial, its still unclear as to whether or not actress Jennifer Lopez would be called to the stand to testify…

BAKA BOYS ARE COMING TO THE BAY AREA

Congratulations are in order to Nick and Eric of the Baka Boys. They are coming to the airwaves in San Francisco and will be holding down the Morning show at my home base 106 KMEL. For folks who are unfamiliar the Baka Boys once ruled the airwaves in LA with their Friday Night Flava show on Power 106. Their high visibility and popularity not only gave rise to a lot of West Coast cats, but also gave some critical exposure to Sway & Tech of the Wake Up Show. Back in the days Sway & Tech used to be guests on Baka Boys show, this exposure help give them some leverage to land their own spot on a LA Radio station. While the Baka Boys held down the fort on Friday Night Flavas they expanded their palette by doing mornings on Power 106. Their show did very well...In fact, it was the Baka Boys who helped introduce LA to the very popular Big Boy who now holds down the morning position on Power 106. From there the Baka Boys bounced over to rival station KKBT [The Beat] where they held down the afternoon slot… Now they’re headed from LaLa Land up to the Bay… The buzz about them is good. These cats are straight Hip-Hop headz and will no doubt represent that to the fullest… We wish them much success. These cats have come a long ways from the days when they were producing beats and making mixtapes in their native Bakersfield, California.

On a side note, Bay Area native, Big Von Johnson who has made a name for himself here in the Bay Area with his Hip Hop show the Chop Shop will also be joining the ranks at KMEL. He’ll not only be holding down the fort from 6-10 but he’ll also be doing the Chop Shop on a nightly basis from 10-12 midnight.. Not since Sway held down a show called The Bomb has there been a nightly Hip Hop show.. This will be good for area.. We wish him much success..

WACK AND PHAT AWARDS

A WACK Award goes to the San Francisco Chronicle for dissing Keith Keef Knight of the San Francisco group Marginal Prophets.. In addition to spitting lyrics on the mic.. Keef pens a very popular comic strip called the ‘K Chronicles’. His strip can be read in newspapers and online outlets throughout the country.. He is also developing a comic series for Nickalodeon. Folkshere in the Bay Area were proud when it appeared that he was gonna be picked up by the hometown paper the San Francisco Chronicles.. However, the newspaper fronted…

Keef described the turn of events this way…;

"the k chronicles has been unceremoniously dropped from the s.f.chronicle after three weeks because they "don't have space." they ran it for the first 3 weeks and then jerked me around for another three weeks, saying they "forgot to put it in" and promising they would run it the next week. after i called about a third missed week , they barely got up the cajones to tell me they had dropped the strip.."

Folks are being asked to complain and speak out on this…My man Keef represents Hip Hop to the fullest so don’t let the mainstream dis our own..You can either call
777-7165 to complain to a human being
777-7006 to leave a message

or jam them up by email..:

A WACK Award goes to BayCity News.. This is a news organization that decided to automatically attribute a night club shooting as being a rap concert. The incident in question occurred in the parking lot of an Oakland night club when folks couldn’t get in.. It was a private function that was held the day after Christmas and had nothing to do with rap.. I guess because the shooter was a Black man and many of the patrons were Black, the news agency sent out their assessment on the wire which was then picked up by many of the local TV news and radio stations… A quick phone call to the police department noted they themselves knew and did not describe the event as a rap concert so why did BayCity news? We never got a clear answer…. They kept trying to pass the buck.. They get a Wack Award..

A PHAT Award goes out to E-40 who rolled through the Friday Nite Vibe show the other week and announced that he and longtime rap rival Mac Dre have agreed to do a record together. For folks who live in the Bay especially in Vallejo, for 40 and Dre to come together to do a song is a big deal.. It not only brings to artist together, but also two neighborhoods that have feuded for years.. This should be a dope record and hopefully set a good example for those who see the symbolism behind the two coming together..

A PHAT Award goes to Boots of the Coup who is set to record a live album at Slim’s Night Club in San Francisco sometime next week.. He announced that he’ll be covering all of the old classics that helped but The Coup on the map.. We’ll let you know the final details on this event and what one needs to do to score some tickets …

A PHAT Award goes out to The Artist Network of Refuse & Resist! They are gearing to present their fourth annual Artspeak which will focus on the Stolen Lives Project and their ongoing fight against police brutality.
For those who don’t know, each year, ArtSpeaks! brings together hundreds of artists and producers to create a truly unique and powerful collaborative multi-media event. It is one of the few events that artists, plan and develop from beginning to end. The Stolen Lives Project, is dedicated to remembering all of those killed by the police. Thus far, over two thousand stories have been collected by Stolen Lives Project stemming from incidents over the last decade. This organization was started by the Iris Baez Foundation, The National Lawyers' Guild and the October 22nd Coalition Against Police Brutality and the Criminalization of a Generation The Stolen Lives Project has also created a series of TV PSAs which have appeared on MTV and BET. They featured the families of those murdered and artists such Chuck D, Goodie Mobb, Lord Jamal, Ozomatli, Danny Hoch, Reg E. Gaines and Wyclef Jean which have been shown on BET and MTV.

This years concert comes at a critical when the truth about police brutality has become a part of the national conversation, while victims and their family members are refusing to be silenced. It comes at a time when the U.S. has then largest death row in the world and whole sections of our society stand under the government's gun in what can only be called a politics of cruelty and punishment. It comes at a time when the city of Los Angeles is now in the midst of the biggest police scandal in US history - centering around Ramparts Division. It comes at a time when over 2,500 people marched in L.A. against police brutality on October 22 - and stood up against rubber bullets and baton wielding police on horseback - successfully completing the rally in the face of an unprovoked attack. One week later, the country awoke to news of another outrageous police murder of an African American actor, Anthony Dwain Lee, shot through a window at a Halloween party in the affluent
neighborhood of Benedict Canyon.

Featured at this years event will be a whos who of Cali’s Hip Hop Underground.. Artist blessing the stage include; Blackalicious, Jerry Quickley, Pam the Funkstress, Freestyle Fellowship with P.E.A.C.E., Mikah 9, Aceyalone and Jupiter Aztlan Underground The Dwight Trible Ensemble BessKeep East LA Sabor Factory, Mystic Che Guevara All Stars (with The Members of Ozomatli) Mike Ladd, Joy Jones Babu & Iriscience of Dilated Peoples Boots from the Coup Ras Kass Blackloveraide8rs with Dr. Oop Wozani the rhythm bugz(b-boys)

The El Rey Theater which is located on 5515 Wilshire Blvd in LA also deserves a Phat Award.. for coming through and hosting the event.. A number of LA venues turned down the event for fear of either Hip Hop or reprisals from LAPD..
