First things first..Wyclef Jean, Common, Busta Rhymes, LL Cool J and Kirk Franklin will be nominated for a NAACP Image Award..mmmm I'm not quite sure who I would pick.. Common by far has been the most active and visible alongside Wyclef..Both were involved with political activities this past year.. Common spoke on a couple of panels including one at the Democratic Convention.. Wyclef stepped it up and put his money where his mouth is by boycotting a couple of concerts in South Carolina where they still fly the confederate flag.

.Busta had a nice role in the Shaft movie where he played side kick to actor Sam Jackson.. He also got slapped with 5 years probation for gun possession.. I'm glad he didn't get jail time.. But that's not the most positive image to bring to the table.. He also got snagged by some woman in North Carolina who claims he's her baby daddy..and needs to pay child support..

LL does some cool stuff with his sleep away camp..Camp Cool J.. He was also in the movie 'Any Given Sunday'.. He released a lack luster album where he claimed to be The Greatest of All Time [GOAT] and presented some awards on a couple of shows.. He may have done some other things behind the scenes.. One would've hoped LL would've been more active and visible during this last election..

Kirk Franlin I guess is a rapper.. I'm sure he done some cool stuff with his church and stuff.. But he's never had a big hit that has been on par with his big song 'Stomp' from a couple of years back.. My question regarding Kirk is what has he done within Hip Hop lately?

Supposedly 300 industry professional made the nominations for the NAACP Image Awards in the rap category..I'm wondering if they missed some soldiers who put in work last year.. I'm thinking Mos Def and Talib Kweli should've been on that list..Didn't these cats bring together more then 20 artist to record an anti police brutality song..? Remember the Hip Hop For Respect Project? We should also mention Mos and Talib own and run a book store in Brooklyn..Mos Def volunteered his time on more then a few occasions to do concerts and help speak out on crucial issues including California's Prop 21 law.. Finally Mos Def's album was 'Black on Both Sides' was given to Vice President Al Gore with the recommendation that Mos' album represented the positive side of Hip Hop..

dead prez should also be up there.. These guys deserve major credit for aggressively addressing the issues at hand.. However, they may be a bit to militant for the NAACP..Lastly how could we forget The Roots.. ? These guys like Common and Mos Def have continuously stayed involved on the political front.. They have constantly volunteered their time especially around issues concerning the prison industrial complex and the case surrounding Mumia..

One person who won't be getting an Image Award is Eminem.. he is again the source of alot of controversy.. The organization GLAAD {Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation} has promised to picket the upcoming Grammys ceromonies [Feb 21] to protest Eminem being nominated..They claim his violent lyrics are setting a tone that leads to violence against Gays ...They will be joined by a number of other Gay, lesbian and women's organizations who are in agreement.. They may have to consider another tactic. due to the fact that the more Eminem gets protested the more he sells.. He still maintains his lyrics aren't to be taken seriously and for the most part sees all this as one big joke..

In other news .. It looks like Public Enemy is set to make a return to the Hip Hop arena. They are hard at work in Atlanta recording what is being called 'The Black Album'. As has been the case in true PE fashion the album will touch upon a blisterin array of politically charged topics. One cut 'Son of a Bush' is a revitalization of a song Chuck D and Professor Griff did with their new band Confrontation Camp. They performed it last July during the R epublican Convention. Initially the song was more of a chant, but the new version will lay down the social and political impact Bush's presidency will have on many in America...Currently the group has a new track circulating around the internet called 'We Don't Need You' which was produced by up and coming producer Bill Tha Pharmacizt out of Santa Cruz. Professor Griff in an interview with the Source magazine noted that If Bush does what he did in Texas, America is in deep trouble.. Many of the album's new songs will be performed with a band.
