Violence and mayhem marred the April 20th rap show at Eastmont Mall headlined by Tha Dogg Pound. Organizers blamed the unfortunate melee on the "off-duty" attitude of the off-duty Oakland cops hired specifically for crowd control. Ironically that same day across the bay in San Quentin State Prison another concert, that included Poohman went without incident..........

The Conscious Daughters, who just inked a new management deal with Earle Barrington, recently went in the studio with Mac Mall and Vel Bacardy to record a track for the Wild West/American artist......

Do call it a comeback: Digital Underground are back after three long rap years with a new record on a new label.....

FUNCTION AT THE JUNCTION: Hobo Junction's Whoridas got signed to South Paw/Delicious Vinyl. Meanwhile Saafir has left Quest/Warner over what manager Sleuth called "creative differences".

Another former Quest artist is Clever Jeff who is much happier being signed to the smaller local OM Records. Jeff, whose debut got slept on by way too many, is about to go into Richmond's One Little Indian studios with legendary Bay Area producer Al Eaton to record his second album.....

Another East Bay rapper who switched from a major to an independent label is COZ....

David Paul and the Bomb magazine (longtime supporters of vinyl) are gearing up for the release two great new albums: 'Bomb Worldwide' (international rap compilation) and 'Return of The DJ - Volume Two'. Expect them to drop in May and June respectively. Also keep a lookout for Return of the DJ (Vol I) to be released on CD shortly...

Coming our way from downtown Oakland label Another Hit Records is a new Latino rap compilation entitled 'Definition of Brown' which will include Aztlan Nation, MC Man, and Phame. Contact (510) 251-0135...

The soundtrack to the new Tom Berenger movie, 'The Substitute', includes cuts from Master P, TRU and Young Murder Squad featuring Sh'Killa...

Can Touch This: looks like MC Hammer's famed Fremont hills mansion can be touched by those creditors who are demanding to get paid by the former holy ghost boy who forgot to pay many of his bills over the last few years including IRS taxes. As a result of all of these outstanding debts ($10 mill) Hammer recently filed for bankruptcy protection..

Rap Pages current (DJ) issue has a cool feature on Frisco's West Coast Rock Steady Crew (Q-Bert, Apollo, Mixmaster Mike, Disk, 8-Ball, Shortkut etc.) plus a reasonably accurate DJ rap map......

The Luniz spent the month of March in Europe where manager Chris Hicks boasts of their popularity, "they're like Michael Jackson,"and "in Germany one kid walked ten miles in the snow just to get their autograph." Their album, 'Operation Stackola,' has gone gold in Europe. Additionally over the last few months their US summer of '95 hit single 'I Got 5 On It' has dominated the Top Ten Charts in most European countries. Upon recently returning to the states they are busy making plans to start recording their second album.....

Hip Hop Vs The World publisher MonGo Nikol praises the new issue of Murder Dog as "their best yet." It could also be called their bash-KMEL issue as it includes several put-downs of the "peoples station."............
