Looks like the phrase radio war has taken on new meaning this past weekend as the battle between Hot 97 and Power 105 in New York continues to heat up. This time its came to physical blows as Funkmaster Flex of Hot 97 turned himself in this weekend after being accused of laying hands on rival deejay MTV's Steph Lova. The weekend assault has made front pages of the NY Daily News. It has one wondering, what the hell was Flex thinking...Not only does this add to all the craziness that seems to assault Hip Hop, but it also underscores the ongoing disrespect that some seem to have for women.

As it stands now, it appears that the altercation may have come about because of a controversial interview Steph Lova a former Hot 97 deejay conducted with Nas. This took place a couple of months ago in June after Hot 97's Summer Jam concert. Nas was upset because Hot 97 would not allow him to perform his routine. He wanted to simulate a hanging of rival rapper Jay-Z. An angry Nas stormed off over to rival station Power 105 and put Hot 97 on blast. During the interview he ripped into Funkmaster Flex and alluded to the fact that Flex was getting paid to play music on the air. That of course is illegal. Steph Lova co-signed everything Nas was saying. People are speculating that is where the problem may have arrived...

In any case Flex has turned himself in. He's out on bail and will have to show up to court next month to answer the assault charges. We Will keep you posted. All this drama adds to an already troubling situation which includes Power 105 breathing down his and Hot 97's neck. Flex has also had to deal with a paternity suit from a woman who he was cheating on his wife with.

Me personally, it was troubling to see Funk Flex's picture on the front page of the NY newspapers while there was absolutely no coverage of the very successful Hip Hop Speaks event which drew a couple of thousand to Harlem's Riverside Church. It was heart warming and inspiring to hear high school student after high school student speak eloquently about education and what needs to be done to change things. All that has gone obscured by Flex's arrest. One day soon we will hopefully get it together.
